Do you think you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours (3 days)?
You may be eligible for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) which can help prevent HIV even after you’ve had sex! PEP is medication you take if you are currently not living with HIV, and believe you have been exposed to the virus. If taken as directed, PEP can stop HIV from infecting your body.
It is safe, with relatively low side effects. The amount of time you have to begin taking PEP after HIV-exposure occurs is limited (maximum of 72 hours), and its effectiveness decreases after 36 hours, so it is important that you seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
PFY offers free PEP screenings to anyone through age 30, in person or via phone, Monday-Friday between 11am-7pm. Staff can also assist you in the process by escorting you to the hospital and talking with the doctor about your individual needs. Since it is important to access PEP as soon as possible, always be sure to speak with a live person when you call. DO NOT LEAVE A VOICEMAIL! If you become exposed to HIV after PFY work hours, during holidays or weekends, go to your local hospital emergency room or emergency health care facility and ask for PEP.
